Summer in Carlsbad brings warmer temperatures, bright sunshine, coastal winds, and more time spent in air-conditioned spaces. While these conditions may be part of the season, they can also contribute to burning, redness, irritation, and fluctuating vision for people with dry eye disease.
Artificial tears may provide temporary comfort, but frequent symptoms often require a closer look at what is causing the dryness. At Beacon Optometry, we offer advanced dry eye care, including OptiLight IPL, to address factors that may be affecting the quality and stability of your tears.
Healthy tears contain an oily layer that slows evaporation. This oil is produced by the meibomian glands located along the eyelids. When these glands become clogged or inflamed, tears may evaporate too quickly, leading to a common condition called meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD.
Summer weather can make an unstable tear film more noticeable. Wind, heat, fans, air conditioning, increased screen use, and extended contact lens wear may all leave the eyes feeling less comfortable.
Common signs of summer dry eye include:
A dry eye evaluation allows us to identify whether MGD, inflammation, eyelid concerns, or another issue may be contributing to your symptoms.
OptiLight is a light-based treatment designed to improve signs of dry eye disease associated with MGD. The technology delivers controlled pulses of intense pulsed light to the skin below and around the eyes while protective shields cover the eyes.
The treatment targets inflammation, which is a major factor in the cycle of MGD and evaporative dry eye. It may also help restore healthier meibomian gland function so the glands can produce the oils needed for a more stable tear film.
Rather than only adding moisture to the surface of the eyes, OptiLight IPL addresses underlying problems that may be causing tears to evaporate too quickly.
OptiLight sessions are performed in our Carlsbad office and generally take about 10 to 15 minutes. A typical treatment plan includes four sessions scheduled several weeks apart, although recommendations depend on each patient’s condition and response. Most patients can return to their normal activities after treatment.
OptiLight is not appropriate for everyone. Before recommending treatment, we complete a personalized evaluation and review your eye health, skin type, medications, symptoms, and previous treatments.
Eye drops may still have a place in a dry eye care plan, but they are not always enough to address chronic inflammation or meibomian gland dysfunction. By identifying the source of your symptoms, we can recommend care that supports lasting comfort throughout the summer and beyond.
